Connecting with Teens

Building trust, staying emotionally present, and keeping connection alive when teens push back or pull away.

Before the moment
Connection with teens is built outside conflict. Small, steady moments matter more than big talks.
What might be happening underneath?
  • A strong need for autonomy alongside a fear of being controlled or misunderstood.
  • Previous experiences where adults were unsafe, inconsistent, or conditional.
  • Shame, insecurity, or emotional overwhelm hidden behind indifference or sarcasm.
  • Developmental changes that make closeness feel exposing or risky.
Support that helps
  • Invest in low-pressure connection, shared activities, parallel time, humour, and everyday presence.
  • Show interest without interrogation, comment rather than question.
  • Respect their pace. Let connection be invited, not demanded.
  • Be predictably available, even when they appear uninterested.

How am I showing them I am safe to come to, without pushing them to open up?
