How the Academy Supports Good Ofsted & CIW Outcomes

Supports Key Ofsted & CIW Expectations

Ofsted’s Social Care Common Inspection Framework highlights that parents can only support children well when they are given the right time, resources, and guidance.

The Academy helps agencies demonstrate that carers are supported with practical learning, tools, and guidance that strengthen everyday care.

Aligned With National Minimum Standards

Standards 20 and 30 of the National Minimum Standards require agencies to ensure foster and kinship parents have access to high-quality learning and development.

Our trauma-informed learning, tools, and guidance help carers build the skills and understanding they need to meet children’s emotional and behavioural needs.

Strengthens Evidence for Inspection

During inspection, Ofsted considers how well foster parents are prepared and supported.

The Academy provides agencies with a clear, accessible way to evidence structured support, ongoing learning, and practical development opportunities for carers.

Practical Tools That Improve Daily Care

Our approach focuses on real-life strategies, emotional understanding, and therapeutic responses that parents can use in the moment.

This helps carers feel more confident and capable during challenging moments, contributing to the positive outcomes inspectors look for.
Together, these elements help agencies and Local Authorities move beyond attendance-based training towards demonstrable, practice-led support for carers.

Practice-Led Standards that Matter in Fostering

Our learning is designed around the standards and expectations that matter most in fostering, where real-world impact, therapeutic insight, and day-to-day practice are more meaningful than generic accreditation.

The Academy is

Designed by foster parents with lived experience

The Academy is created by foster parents who understand the realities of supporting children with complex trauma. Content is rooted in day-to-day care, real decisions, and the moments carers actually struggle with, not idealised theory.

Guided by practising professionals

The Academy is shaped by an expanding associate team that includes foster parents, a practising therapist, and an award-winning innovator and neurodiversity advocate. This helps ensure content remains grounded, relevant, and responsive to the realities carers face.

Practice-led learning, not generic training

Learning is designed to support carers in real situations, focusing on behaviour, regulation, relationships, and decision-making. The emphasis is on how learning translates into safer, calmer, more confident care.

Designed for immediate use at home

Each course and tool is designed to help parents know what to do tonight, not just what to understand in theory. Scripts, prompts, and practical guidance support carers during tricky moments, not weeks later.

Mapped to fostering standards, not abstract accreditation

All learning is explicitly mapped to National Minimum Standards and Training, Support and Development Standards. This helps agencies and Local Authorities evidence structured support and ensures learning aligns with inspection expectations.

Recognised as CPD activity, with certificates

Carers can download certificates showing course titles and learning duration, allowing agencies and Local Authorities to log learning as CPD within their own systems while keeping the focus on practical impact.

Built using award-winning learning design

The Academy is underpinned by over 25 years of professional learning design experience, including award-winning work across major UK organisations. This ensures content is engaging, accessible, and effective for busy carers.

Grounded in partnership and sector credibility

The Academy has been recognised internationally for using technology to create practical, real-world support for the fostering and kinship care community.

CareMed

CareMed is a simple recording tool designed to help foster and kinship parents, and other professionals make quick notes about medication, first aid, and accidents as they happen. It is there to support real family life, when you are out at the park, sorting tea, getting ready for school, or trying to remember whether you wrote something down later.

Important: CareMed is not a replacement for your fostering service’s own policies, forms, systems, or reporting expectations. Always follow the process your service asks you to use. You may find CareMed helpful as an additional way to capture accurate information in the moment, so that you have a clear factual note to refer back to when updating your official records.

Pull Away

Pull Away is a trauma-informed app designed to support foster parents, adoptive parents, kinship parents and other professionals when children and young people begin to pull away from home.

The app offers in-the-moment guidance, therapeutic scripts, behaviour insights and safeguarding tools to help parents respond calmly, understand what may sit beneath behaviour, and protect both relationships and placement stability.

Steady Ground

This is a short, reflective check-in designed to help you understand what feels steady, what feels stretched, and where support might help right now.

Right Now

When caring for young people, we sometimes ask ourselves "what am I going to do right now?" In moments when things are tough, take a look at this app for some timely reminders. There's nothing ground-breaking in here, but often it's just what you need at that point to re-focus.

Try: In-the-moment, when it's safe to do so, step away from your young person, open the app and breathe.

Pocket Wise

Building financial confidence and independence, together.A practical, trauma-informed money rehearsal app for young people aged 11 to 18.

Young people can practise in a Real World setting or choose an Adventure World, where the same skills are developed through a narrative lens.

Understanding Kinship Care: Insights from the Handle With Care Report, 2025

Lovely to hear Kinship voices. It’s lovely to hear a good explanation of kinship. A lot of people have never heard of Kinship before.
SHARON

Safeguarding in Foster and Kinship Care

Absolutely brilliant, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This was one of the best on-line safeguarding courses I have attended. The mix of direct discussion with course trainer teamed with interactive questions, use of informative short videos and exceptional links to sites that can provide you with practical advice and tools is fantastic.

I've been a social worker for 22 years and have taken helpful links and strategies that I will use in my everyday practice.

So simple to follow, thought provoking and kept my interest throughout. I didn't find myself feeling frustrated or telling myself "I already know this and have heard it all before".

Podcast: Children in Care & Lying

Loved that it was brief but really explained well the reasons behind lying. Breaking it down has helped me understand why a child may be lying and how we can move forward together therapeutically.
angela

Creating a Healing Home: Becoming the Calm Anchor

So simple to follow. The 10 steps are great and not difficult to put in place and achieve. I love the way that it gives clear outcomes and advice on children who maybe reluctant to engage too. Love this.

Shame in Traumatised Children

We have received so much training in PACE over our fostering career but this is the first course which has directly linked shame as the primary emotion driving most of our three girls’ behaviours so thank you for giving such a clear, concise explanation.
Sue

Toxic Masculinity and the Manosphere

Great course and good insight into what children and young people have to navigate in a modern online world on a daily basis.
catherine

Sibling Rivalry & Trauma

Simple, straightforward and PACE based advice. All of the scenarios were so relatable. Resources are brilliant and will be so useful, without being tricky or expensive to source. I love the modelled 'script' approach which provides useful phrases when things escalate.
Sue

Podcast: Children in Care & Lying

It opened my eyes to Therapeutic parenting and opened my mind to PACE.
Nicola

Creating Consequences That Teach, Not Punish

Very good course! You put across the point about achieving the natural way to set consequences in a child friendly way.

I liked the three R’s and the way to put it into a table. This shows how well it can work with the young person.
janet

When Children Have Lived with Domestic Abuse

Thank you, really useful bite-sized course. These are always helpful to consolidate knowledge.

Podcast: Children in Care & Lying

Nicola

Podcast: PACE, DDP & the Five Pearls

Very well put together course. Easy to follow and understand despite the amount of information; explanations about earlier life traumas children carry within, and the therapeutic manner, DDP and PACE, foster carers can adopt to help children and young people learn self-regulation and improve their self- esteem.
