Course Overview

When we talk about trauma, we usually focus on the children and young people who have experienced it. Far less often do we talk about what happens to the adults who walk alongside them.

Whether you're a foster parent, kinship parent, adoptive parent, residential childcare worker, supported lodgings host, teacher or another trusted adult, supporting children who have experienced trauma can leave a mark. Not because you're doing something wrong. Not because you're weak. But because caring deeply for children who are carrying fear, loss, rejection, grief or uncertainty inevitably affects us too.

In this course, we'll explore what happens when the stories, emotions and experiences of the children we support begin to shape our own inner world.

Through a podcast-style conversation, reflective activities, real-life scenarios and practical tools, we'll look at concepts such as vicarious trauma, secondary traumatic stress, empathic distress and emotional overload in a way that feels grounded, accessible and relevant to everyday life.

Most importantly, this course isn't about diagnosing problems or telling you to simply "look after yourself better". It's about helping you recognise what you may be carrying, understand why it happens, and identify practical steps that can help you stay emotionally healthy, connected and effective in your role.

Because supporting children through trauma is important work. But the people doing that work matter too.

This course also comes with our Companion app, 'Carrying Weight'. Designed specifically for foster parents, kinship parents, residential staff, supported lodgings hosts, teachers and other adults supporting children who have experienced trauma, it provides a private space to reflect, recognise early warning signs, access regulation tools, and create a simple support plan.

The app isn't about diagnosis or judgement. It's about helping you pause, notice what you may be carrying, and identify practical steps that can help when you're feeling stretched, overwhelmed or simply in need of a moment to regroup.

Our parents and other professionals love us

A refreshing approach to such important topics, loaded with meaningful ways to remain self-aware and emotionally healthy. A valuable resource for those caring for children who have experienced trauma.
