The Team Around the Child

Course Overview

Caring for a child is deeply personal, but it does not happen in isolation. Around every child is a network of family members, social workers, education professionals, health professionals and other people with different responsibilities.

This course helps prospective and approved foster parents and kinship carers understand how that team works, while recognising the unique knowledge that comes from sharing a child’s everyday life.

You will explore:

  • The difference between the child’s social worker and supervising social worker
  • The roles of the IRO, education professionals, health professionals and family members
  • How care plans, placement plans, delegated authority and different reviews fit together
  • How to contribute useful observations without speaking over the child
  • What to do when responsibilities or decisions are unclear
  • How to challenge a plan calmly when it no longer appears to match the child’s needs

Through practical, interactive situations, you will build confidence in knowing where to look, who to involve and how to bring what you know into the room.

You do not need to memorise the entire system. You need to understand your place within it, the value of your everyday knowledge and how to keep the child at the centre when plans, people or professional opinions become complicated.
