Swearing at carers

Shouting, name-calling, verbal aggression, using offensive or hurtful language.

Before the moment
Swearing is often communication under pressure. The work starts before the words come out.
What might be happening underneath?
  • Big feelings with limited language to express them safely.
  • A sense of powerlessness, swearing creates impact when nothing else works.
  • Fear of being controlled, corrected, or misunderstood.
  • Learned patterns from past environments where shouting meant survival.
  • Shame or embarrassment turning quickly into attack.
Support that helps
  • Notice early signs, raised voice, pacing, sarcasm, clenched jaw, and step in sooner.
  • Lower demands and offer two calm choices, for example, “Do you want to pause now or talk after tea?”
  • Model respectful language consistently, even when you are setting boundaries.
  • Teach and practise alternative phrases in calm moments, “I’m angry,” “I need space,” “This feels unfair.”
