Before, During, After Map

Naming the Need After School

When behaviour shifts after school, there is often a need underneath that has not yet found words. Naming it gently can steady the room enough for boundaries to land.

Before the moment
After school behaviour is often the release valve. The day can take more out of them than it looks.
What might be happening underneath?
  • Depletion after a day of following rules, concentrating, and managing feelings.
  • A need for reassurance after separation, especially when school has felt uncertain or unsafe.
  • Sensory overload from noise, crowds, lights, and constant demands.
  • A need for closeness after navigating social stuff that felt harder than it looked.
  • A need for control when everything else has been decided for them all day.
Support that helps
  • Assume tolerance will be lower at home, plan the after school window to be low demand.
  • Offer predictable landing routines, snack, drink, quiet, movement, then talk.
  • Keep your first response curious, not corrective, behaviour is often communication.
  • Hold expectations gently, especially in the first week back when rhythms are still settling.
Gentle prompt
If this is not “attitude”, what might they be needing that they cannot yet say out loud?
