Before, During, After Map

Physical Aggression

Hitting, kicking, pushing, throwing things at people.

Before the moment
This is the bit we forget when we are exhausted. Tiny prevention beats big repair.
What might be happening underneath?
  • A nervous system already tipped into survival, fight feels safer than words.
  • Fear of being controlled, corrected, or shamed, even if that is not what is happening now.
  • Unmet physical needs, hunger, exhaustion, sensory overload, or emotional build-up with no safe outlet.
  • A memory alarm, this moment feels like a time when power or safety was lost.
Support that helps
  • Lower demands early, choose your battles, offer two calm choices rather than open questions.
  • Make the environment do some of the work, space, quiet, predictable routines, clear transitions.
  • Lead with connection, short check-ins, eye contact if tolerated, a snack or drink, movement before sitting.
  • Notice early body signals, pacing, clenched fists, sharp tone, and intervene sooner rather than later.
