Before, During, After Map

First Day Back at School, Managing Transitions and the Aftermath

Big feelings, big bodies, busy corridors, social pressure, and the “hold it together” crash after school.

Before the moment
Transitions wake up old alarms. Even “good” change can feel unsafe to a nervous system that expects loss.
What might be happening underneath?
  • Anticipatory anxiety, “What if I get it wrong”, “What if they don’t like me”, “What if I can’t cope”.
  • Fear of separation, even when they do not show it, school means disconnection from the safe base.
  • Memory echoes, past exclusions, bullying, shame, or being told off can sit under today’s wobble.
  • Sensory overload, uniforms, noise, smells, crowded corridors, all before learning even begins.
  • Control needs, when life has felt unpredictable, they try to control the morning to feel safe.
Support that helps
  • Make the morning smaller, fewer decisions, clear order, same phrases, same pace.
  • Preview the day, “First we get dressed, then breakfast, then the walk, then I will be here after school.”
  • Offer two calm choices, “Shoes first or jumper first”, choice without chaos.
  • Pack a “bridge object”, a note, a keyring, a photo, a scent on a sleeve, something that says, “We are still connected.”
  • Say the quiet truth, “It might feel wobbly, and you can still do it, we will handle the aftermath together.”
Gentle prompt
If their behaviour is a survival strategy, what are they trying to make feel safer this morning?
