Emotional Numbing or Over-independence

“I’m fine”, doing everything alone, avoiding comfort, shutting down emotions, rejecting help.

Before the moment
Over-independence is often praised. Emotionally, it is usually about protection.
What might be happening underneath?
  • A belief that needing others leads to disappointment, rejection, or harm.
  • Learned self-reliance from early neglect, inconsistency, or unmet emotional needs.
  • Emotional numbing as a way to survive repeated loss, rejection, or overwhelm.
  • Difficulty recognising, naming, or trusting feelings because emotions once felt unsafe.
  • A strong internal rule, “I cope alone, because no one else will help me.”
Support that helps
  • Respect their autonomy while staying emotionally available and consistent.
  • Avoid pushing closeness or emotional disclosure too quickly.
  • Offer support without expectation, “I’m here if you want help, now or later.”
  • Notice where independence turns into isolation or emotional withdrawal.
Gentle prompt
Where did they learn that relying on themselves was safer than relying on others?
